April's MovieBlog Prize

Over the summer, while all the normal people are on vacation, the TLC will still be going strong, we will be ordering and receiving movies the entire 3 months. For a chance to win this month's contest you just have to leave a comment with the ONE movie or TV show you REALLY want to see on our selves when you return to school in the fall.

We will (more than likely) acquire the media that you all leave comments about, but the winners of the comment contest will also win:

1 - A framed "Sweeney Todd" movie poster.
2 - Two tickets to a movie at the Carousel.
3 - Two tickets to a movie at the Carousel!

Think hard about that one thing you want us to get and leave a comment down below!!!

I would love to see some more action fantasy TV shows like Heroes, Charmed, or Smallville.

I think you should get Firefly the series and Serientity because they are cult favories and are awesome. You should also get more MST3K because just one volume isn't enough for the greatness that is MST3k

I agree that Firefly and/or Serenity would be great, but there are some films that would be even more beneficial to our collection. We need more exploitation films such as The Wild One, Blood Feast, Reefer Madness, I Spit on Your Grave, and Lady Snowblood. These films, along with Blacula and Cannibal Holocaust, are entertaining and would introduce more students to film history. Any one of them would be wonderful. As for T.V. series, Batman Beyond would be an excellent addition because it continues Bruce Wayne's character, has developed villains, offers dark and effective animation, and adult-themed plots. It would also satisfy our anticipation for The Dark Knight.

I like the Serenity and Firefly ideas. Also Heroes has been asked about a number of times. These we will definitely look into acquiring for the fall.

I Spit on Your Grave is one of my favorite exploitation films. I saw it at a very tender age and it has left an indelible mark. This is a title I have want us to get, and since Cannibal Holocaust hasn't gotten any complaints (yet), then it is time to order I Spit on Your Grave, too.

Keeping with the whole more sci-fi thing, I would love to see the new Doctor Who seasons added to the collection. I just love them!

If we're trying to introduce more students to film history, we need a lot more classic foreign films on DVD. Some of these are available, but only on tape or for in-house viewing. Some suggestions:

Bergman: The Seventh Seal, Persona, Wild Strawberries

Fellini: La Dolce Vita, La Strada, 8 1/2

Bunuel: The Discreet Charm of the Bourgoeisie, Viridiana, Belle de Jour

Godard: Weekend, Pierrot Le Fou, Contempt

Kurosawa: Ikiru, Rashomon, Ran

Also, we're desperately in need of a 2001: A Space Odyssey DVD.

I would like to see DVDs for TV shows like Law and Order: SVU, Band of Brothers, and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
P.T. Anderson's films (Magnolia, Boogie Nights, Hard Eight, Punch Drunk Love, and There Will Be Blood) are always good to have on DVD. Kubrick's films (2001: A Space Odyssey, Dr. Strangelove, A Clockwork Orange, etc), Mike Leigh films (Topsy Turvy, All or Nothing, Naked, etc), and a few Scorsese ones you don't already have (Taxi Driver, Gangs of New York, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore) to name some. Also, a completion of Sidney Lumet, the Coens, and Clint Eastwood's movie collections would be nice.
These filmmakers really have bold or intriguing styles that may interest movie-lovers and the average movie-goer.

Laath,

You should look up your titles, most of the ones you have mentioned we already have on DVD for students to check out. We just got in every Coen Brothers movie except for "Hudsucker's Proxy" and "Intolerable Cruelty" (which definitely fits its title). Hudsucker we WILL acquire.

We have a lot from Anderson, but as I really dislike his style (worst working director in my opinion), I can not tell you what we have. Look it up and let us know the two to three that you REALLY want.

We have the all important "Sergio Leone Anthology," as well as quite a number of Eastwood films. As for Lumet, how about a title or two? "Before the Devil knows your Dead" has been put on the shelf, we have 3 copies.

Finally, I too am a huge Scorsese and Kubrick fan, and I agree with you. We will try to fill the holes in our collection in the upcoming months.

yours,

Jeff,

Great comment and we all quite agree. We will begin working towards getting browsing copies of the films you mentioned. Also let us know about re-issues that have never been on DVD or VHS before.

Cheers,

Your wish is our command. As a big fan of the Doctor Who series myself I have been trying to get more in, especially the classic series. Just today we have put on our shelf SEVEN DVD's worth of the fourth (and some say the best) doctor, Tom Baker.

First is "Horror at Fang Rock."

Then we have the entire "Key to Time" series that is 6 full serials long. The Doctor and his assistant must travel time and the universe to find the 6 parts to an important crystal to stop an evil entity. Each stop they make is a new adventure.

This series was originally broadcast in 1978-79 and the second DVD is a serial written by the great Douglas Adams of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" books.

As time goes on we will try to get more of the good Doctor, especially the new series.

I'm glad to hear that you're building up your Doctor Who collection and I encourage you to continue with that trend. I'd also like to see you filling in some of the incomplete tv series that you have on hand, like the West Wing and Gilmore Girls and Desperate Housewives and Lost, etc. It's always frustrating when you can't find the first season or two, only a later season, or when you've watched the first season or two and are left hanging.

I have looked up the movies I have mentioned. Sometimes they will say they are in, but they won't be. Just today I tried to get Taxi Driver because it was on the shelf, only to find out it was still gone.

Now, some of the movies are on VHS, and I know this, but I am talking about a more complete DVD collection. The Coen Brothers' movies I have seen (it looks like you have the box set my friend owns), but I was referring to every one of their movies. I should have been more specific, yes. Same goes for Eastwood (Unforgiven, White Hunter, Black Heart).

Back to Anderson: I just noticed Boogie Nights is on DVD, which I never saw before. I'm sure you've ordered There Will Be Blood already. Hard Eight is only on VHS, as well as Punch Drunk Love. I would add those two to the DVD collection.

12 Angry Men, Dog Day Afternoon, and Serpico are always going to be good Lumet films to have.

Random films:
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
The Pianist(you have this, but it is in BAD shape)
The Night of the Hunter
Rebecca
Scarface (1932)
The Great Escape
Zulu
Rang De Basanti
All the President's Men
Ben-Hur
The Color Purple
Julius Caesar (1953)

I recommend John Frankenheimer's 1966 "Seconds" and the dvd version of Georges Franju's 1962 "Eyes Without A Face" (the latter's Criterion edition includes great special features). Both films offer interesting takes on individuality, ethics (mediacl and otherwise), social position, and constructions of the self.

Hey Laurie, "Eyes Without a Face" would be a great addition. John Carpenter even said that it influenced Michael Meyers' mask.

Laathe,

As an aside, "Night of the Hunter" is one of my most favoritest movie ever. It is the ONLY movie actor Charles Laughton directed, due to the rather negative critical review it gained (reviews that broke his heart).

However, time has proved the naysayers wrong, Robert Mitchum puts in one of the creepiest and unsettling villain roles ever laid down on celluloid. Lillian Gish is great as the strong, sweet, independant, "mother goose" like Rachel Cooper.

The fairy tale quality of the movie is what I love the most about it. Laughton created a beautiful, starck, black and white image that constantly borders on the surreal and an abandoned haunted playground.

It is truly a filmatic treat and anyone who has not seen "Night of the Hunter" must go out and watch it! We will have to find a nice Criterion edition of this movie for the library.

Thanks Laathe!
